When viewing any page on a MediaWiki wiki, you'll find three main navigation elements:
# The [[#Sidebar|sidebar]] on the left gives you access to important pages in the wiki such as Recent changes or Upload file.
# At the top of the page are links (often called [[#Page Tabs|tabs]]) which relate to the page currently displayed: its associated discussion page, the version history, and—most notably—the edit link.
# In the top right corner you'll find [[#User Links|user links]]; as an anonymous user, you'll see a link to create an account or log in (they are the same page). As a logged-in user you have a collection of personal links, including ones to your user page and [[Help:Preferences|preferences]].

== Sidebar ==

The sidebar is displayed on the left edge of the page below the site logo (if using the default MonoBook skin). This sidebar gives you access to important pages in the wiki such as Recent changes or Upload file.

This is helpful when you are looking for pages of related information. The “{{lcfirst:{{int:whatlinkshere}}}}” information can also be useful when you are refactoring wiki pages and need to check whether links to this page are still relevant after changes in the current page.
:* The “{{lcfirst:{{int:recentchangeslinked}}}}” tool lists all recent changes in the pages linked to from the current page. Recent changes to all relevant template pages are included in the resulting page list. The "Hide minor edits" option that can be set in the user [[Help:Preferences|preferences]] applies, among other things, to “{{lcfirst:{{int:recentchangeslinked}}}}”.

== Page Tabs ==

The page tabs are displayed at the top of the article to the right of the site logo (if using the default MonoBook skin). These tabs allow you to perform actions or view pages that are related to the current article. The available default actions include: viewing, editing, and discussing the current article. The specific tabs displayed on your pages depend on whether or not you are logged into the wiki and whether you have sysop (administrator) privileges on the wiki. On special pages only the namespace tab is displayed.

Administrators can add or remove tabs by using JavaScript or installing extensions, so the tabs you see may be different depending on which wiki you are using.

== User Links ==

The user links are displayed at the top far right of the article (if using the default MonoBook skin). These tabs allow the logged-in user to view and edit their user page and wiki preferences. Additionally, the user links allow the user to quickly access their contributions to the wiki and logout.

For anonymous users the user links is replaced by a link to the wiki login page or, if enabled, a link to your IP address and your IP address's talk page.

: This links to your user page which is where you can put information about yourself, store bits of information you want to remember or whatever else you fancy.

: This links to your discussion page, where people can leave messages for you.

There are some repeatedly created, but unwanted page titles, and some commonly spammed wiki pages (external links or just nonsense text messages) on MediaWiki.org.

== Spam Protection for specific titles ==

If you are repeatedly receiving spam on a page that doesn't otherwise exist there are three ways of blocking the page from being edited once you have deleted it.

Additional suggestion for visitors: Watch ''W/w/index.php'', ''Talk:Main Page/'' and other such pages on your own wikis and add any URLs added by spammers to your [[meta:Spam blacklist|Spam blacklist]] (see [[Extension:SpamBlacklist|SpamBlacklist extension]]).

=== Method 1: Protecting a nonexisting page (preferred) ===

As [[MediaZilla:2919|Bug 2919]] has been fixed in December 2007 for MediaWiki 1.12alpha, we use this method since then here; [[/list]] was recently deleted because of these changes.

MediaWiki offers native protection of nonexistent pages now, and this is applied in the same manner as ordinary protection (of existing pages).

=== Method 2: Dummy page ===

This is the easiest method for older MediaWiki installations (before MediaWiki 1.12):

Create a template called <nowiki>{{Unwantedpage}}</nowiki> or so, and place it in the problem pages. By having some content on the pages you are able to protect them from editing, which may be more user-friendly than method 3, particularly if the pages may conceivably hold content in the future.

=== Method 3: Cascading protection ===

If you are using a version of MediaWiki with cascading protection enabled (since MediaWiki 1.10), then another method is to create a central page to administer the protection, and within that page transclude each problem page using code like this:

Enabling cascading protection for the central page will then protect all transcluded pages as well, even if they don't exist, so it saves you polluting your wiki with a lot of dummy pages that you don't need.

This is the method we have used here on MediaWiki.org in 2007.

As for all cases of cascading protection, be careful with it. Delete the unwanted page before you add it to the central page where cascading protection is enabled. Otherwise, especially if there are other templates placed on an unwanted page, and if you have thus protected other pages by accident, it might take some time to manually revert that protection.

Some pages on MediaWiki.org are protected. This may be because they have some important information on them which should not be removed or vandalized.

[[Special:Listusers/sysop|Administrators]] are able to edit protected pages. If you have a suggestion for a change, even if it's only a typo, please '''leave a note on the article's talk page''' or on the talk page of one of the sysops.
